Chlamydia…The Silent Disease

Let’s be honest, most people think that chlamydia is a minor/less severe sexually transmitted disease and are not alarmed if contraction occurs. However, this is a terrible way of thinking because actually chlamydia can cause irreversible health issues if not treated. Chlamydia is sexually transmitted during vaginal, anal, or oral sex and can also be transmitted to a newborn during vaginal childbirth. After someone is exposed, symptoms may or may not occur. Symptoms in women include painful urination and abnormal vaginal discharge, and men experience burning and itching at the tip of the penis, painful urination, and sometimes discharge.

Majority of the population does not experience symptoms which makes regular testing so important when you are sexually active. In the case that you do not experience symptoms, there can be devastating affects to a woman’s reproductive system.  Untreated chlamydia in a female can cause Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) which damages the fallopian tubes and uterus and can lead to sterility. Poor decisions early in life can affect outcomes later on in life. When engaging in sexual activity, make sure to always wear a condom or practice safe sex in a monogamous relationship.
