HIV is the virus that causes AIDS which leads to the failure of the immune system. The CDC estimates that there are over 1 million people living with HIV in the US, and over 200,000 may not know they are infected.
States with the highest HIV/AIDS rates include:
- New York
- Washington D.C.
- New Jersey
- South Carolina
- North Carolina
As the map shows HIV/AIDS is not evenly distrusted across the US. It appears to be concentrated in states that have larger metropolitan area. The Northeast has the highest rate per 100,000 of people living with HIV/AIDS followed by the South, West, and then Midwest.
