Syphilis and Babies

Did you know that syphilis is the reason from 500,000 baby deaths a year in Africa. A cheap yet effective test, combined with treatment could prevent these deaths.

A recent study published in the Lancet Infectious Diseases Journal, found that syphilis is a major cause of infant death in many poorer countries. The antenatal syphilis screening is the most cost-effective way of improving the infant survival rate in these countries.

Some 2 million pregnant women, world wide, are infected with, syphilis and about 1.2 million of these women infect there babies, whom can be still born, have a low birth rate, or can have a congenitally infection.
